Kit Information

Grade: 1
Type: Physical Science
In this unit about solids and liquids, students are able to explore the characteristics and behavior of both solids and liquids through activities relating to examination and experimentation. Critical thinking skills are enhanced when sorting, comparing, and contrasting takes place. As the unit begins by focusing on solids, student groups participate in hands-on activities to include observing, investigating, and testing for color, shape, hardness, potential magnetism, buoyancy, and movement down a ramp. During the investigations of liquids, students initially focus on two specific liquids. Then the students move on to further examination of other liquids by observing and testing behavior, drop size and shape, water mixtures, and how quickly various liquids are able to move down a slick surface. In a final lesson, students are able to summarize their overall observations and learning through group discussion and the creation of Venn diagrams.

This kit works very well with English and Spanish speaking students. The handouts are in both English on one side and Spanish on the other.
