Kit Information

Grade: 2
Type: Earth Science
This unit allows and encourages students to explore a variety of soils using basic techniques of observation and investigation. Students will be able to discover and identify different properties of humus, clay, sand, and garden soil. Then when a "mystery soil" is presented to the students, they will be able to analyze its composition based on previously learned information. After conducting a variety of tests, students will have the skills to draw conclusions, record data, and communicate observations. Hands-on activities will include examining soil and root growth, separating soil into component parts and identifying those parts, testing soil for absorption and percolation, and creating and maintaining a compost which includes soil, plant remains, and red worms.
