Kit Information

Grade: 2
Type: Earth Science

In this unit, students are able to satisfy their curiosity about materials that help to form the earth, specifically rocks and minerals. Students will explore the different properties of rocks and minerals by participating in a variety of hands-on activities. Student teams will be able to sort twelve rock samples. The teams will compare and contrast properties within the samples as well as sort the samples into the three basic rock groups; igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Mineral specimens will be carefully examined, named, and tested for streak color, hardness, magnetism, luster, transparency, and shape. Profile sheets and field guide cards will be developed as the unit progresses. Students will receive a final challenge when they are asked to use the knowledge that they have gained from this unit in order to identify three "mystery" minerals.
