Kit Information

Grade: 4
Type: Earth Science
In this unit, student groups use stream tables in order to explore the earth science areas of environmental science, weather, geology, and landscape engineering. Students will make predictions, conduct investigations, and make conclusions while participating in many hands-on activities. When using the stream tables, students will create a model of the water cycle, observe changes in land due to the interaction of water, discuss slope and water flow, collect and compare samples of runoff, and design and build a dam in the stream table to see how it affects the flow of water and potential land erosion. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the effects of ground cover by planting seeds in the stream tables. Lastly, students will design and build an ideal landscape around a homesite so that the surrounding land and water are in harmony with one another.
