Kit Information

Grade: 5
Type: Physical Science
In this unit, students have an opportunity to examine and chemically test various foods that are commonly found in a person's daily diet. Students will test these foods for starch, glucose, fat, and protein content. They will become aware of the association between science and the chemical testing of food products that support human health. Hands-on activities include the testing of ten different food products while looking for four specific nutrients, examining food labels in order to broaden students' awareness of what is contained in the food that they eat, and the analysis of five liquids when testing for nutrient content. Careful lab work, record keeping, and data analysis are all important components of this lesson.
